Well, pumpkin season has arrived! We’ve transitioned our coffee drinks and desserts into everything pumpkin. But there’s more to October than just the cozy feeling of fall. During this month, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders raises awareness about hearing protection. As we wrap up this time of the year, we’d like to remind everyone about the importance of maintaining good hearing health.

More than 40 million Americans suffer from hearing loss according to the Better Hearing Institute. Unfortunately, this problem isn’t only prevalent to the older population any longer. Our younger crowd has also reported experiencing hearing loss.

We typically associate aging, diseases, and chronic exposure to loud sounds as common causes of hearing loss. Out of those three, Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has been on a constant rise. In our country, 1 in 4 adults experience hearing damage. About 1.1 billion teens and young adults are at risk because of their personal listening devices.

However, NIHL is absolutely preventable.
